Three is the tragic number for detectives on Election Day

While many in Philadelphia spent yesterday caught up in the hoopla of Election Day, the day offered no reprieve for city homicide detectives, who scrambled to three murder scenes.

While many in Philadelphia spent yesterday caught up in the hoopla of Election Day, the day offered no reprieve for city homicide detectives, who scrambled to three murder scenes.

In the first case, someone shot Andre Robbins, 35, of Saybrook Street near 63rd in Southwest Philadelphia's Elmwood section, in the shoulder and wrist about 2:30 p.m. on Hadfield Street near 57th in Kingsessing, said Officer Leeloni Palmiero, a police spokeswoman.

Doctors declared him dead at 2:42 p.m. at Mercy Philadelphia Hospital, where an unknown motorist had dropped him off. Police later found the bullet-riddled car that delivered him to the hospital on Larchwood Avenue near 56th in West Philly. It was unclear how the driver was related to the incident.

Police determined an argument sparked the deadly shooting, but reported no suspects or arrests.

In the second case, someone shot Johnny Johnson, 36, of Jefferson Street near 32nd in Brewerytown, in the abdomen just before 5:30 p.m. on Redfield Street near Media in Carroll Park, Palmiero said. Police rushed him to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he died at 6:49 p.m., Palmiero said. A 28-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to her buttocks in that incident; she was treated and released from Presbyterian.

Police blamed an argument for that shooting too, but reported no suspects or arrests.

In the third case, someone shot Eliezer Mendez, 22, of Swanson Street near Indiana Avenue in Kensington, in the torso just before 8:30 p.m. on Stella Street near Emerald in Kensington, Palmiero said. Mendez died 25 minutes later at Temple University Hospital, Palmiero said. Police reported no suspects or motive.

Police today also identified a man slain Monday night in Carroll Park as Alex Fauntleroy, 33, of Lansdowne. Police on patrol in the area of 54th Street and Girard Avenue heard gunshots and found Fauntleroy lying faceup in the road. Paramedics declared him dead on the scene at 11:48 p.m. Police reported no suspects or motive.

Tipsters can call homicide detectives at (215) 686-3334 or -3335.

The cases bump the city's murder count to 87 so far this year, down one from 88 at the same time last year, police data shows.
