Cops: Temple students bound, robbed during home invasion

POSTED: Monday, March 4, 2013, 9:34 PM

Police are searching for three men who allegedly bound a group of Temple University students during a home invasion robbery.

The incident was reported at 7:30 p.m. at an off-campus residence on North 18th Street near Berks. Police said a female student was walking home and was followed by three black males, two of which were armed. The males allegedly forced the woman inside her second-floor apartment.

The woman and three female roommates who were inside the apartment were duct taped, police said. The robbers took off with computer equipment, cell phones, an uknown amount of cash and numerous credit cards. The victims were not harmed.

The university sent an advisory to students notifying them of the incident at 9:14 p.m. The advisory urged students to use caution in the area and "take advantage of TUr Door and other forms of transportation."

No arrests have been made.

The university isn't the problem. It's a great place. It's the degenerate racist neighbors who prey upon students of all races and religions and rob them. That's a statement of fact. Look at the numbers.

But that racist SOB Darrell Clarke will tell you that Temple students are the problem. Meanwhile, people in his neighborhood are acting like animals and that can't be disputed in this situation. Do something about it, Clarke!

Horrific. Sadly, North Philadelphia remains one of the most dangerous parts of a city which had the highest per capita murder rate of major cities in 2011. Temple tries so hard to market academics and sports, but this stuff is damaging to those efforts.

Temple should bypass the local community groups and keep bulldozing north to their hospital, east to Fishtown, and south to Center city.

Enuf with the race remarks. A group of white men robbed, beat and tied up a 94 year old woman. One of the perpetrators was her grandson. I could call them all worthless white trash and other derogatory names to prove what.
There is good and bad in all races of people. I live in the black community and I am always pissed off to see innocent looking white people wondering thru the hood looking for drugs, sex and whatever else. Stop the race hate, black people are not bad. After all, crime, theft, stealing, violence are mostly attributed to Europeans. There are very few jails and prisons in Africa. There is not a word for lock in many African villages. Most Africans don't lock their doors. You've taught us a lot of wrong in America, we didn't come here like this, you did. So shut the front door on your way out.

This is an awful occurrence, yes. Philadelphia is however a city... As a product of a rural community, later a Temple student, and now a Philadelphia resident, I can tell you that evil is everywhere. I spent three of my four years at Temple in an off campus apartment and I was lucky enough to never have had a problem, nor did I feel anymore a target there than anywhere else. Income disparities and a concentrated population will always attract crime. It is sad but true.

My son spent 4 years at Temple living off campus starting his sophomore year. He made sure his rental was not in the ghetto but he still had to be street smart especially when biking down Diamond to the river for rowing practice.

it must be those Asian students taking a study break from math, statistics, nuclear medicine, chemistry and computer science studies - just blowing off a little steam. Or those Jewish youths taking a break from daily academia and classes on 'How to control the media, banking, and the entertainment world.'. It's got to be one of these groups.

I went to Temple in the 80's'. It was bad back then. Gold chain rip offs on campus in the daylight hours. Most students knew that you never ventured north of Broad Street if you wanted to remain alive.

I am shocked the women weren't sexually assaulted. And I certainly hope this wasn't an incident of the students selling drugs, cutting in on the neighborhood business. That's been known to happen. I'm surprised that parents don't tour the area before allowing their young naive teenagers to move in those houses and walk those streets. When you have the privileged few intermingling with the disadvantaged many you're going to cause resentment. I don't know what the answer is but I know my children wouldn't live in such a dangerous area. Not as long as I have anything to say about it.

What's the problem here? These kids are at Temple to get an education and they just learned a valuable lesson. Work hard, make money and it will be forceably taken from you and redistributed to the lazy takers of our society. Welcome to the real world of supporting every ghetto dweller. This is probably a new Obama program where two birds are killed with one stone: handouts are given freely as usual and young white americans get a dose of what will happen the rest of their lives.

Only time Clarke or the block captain care is when the bad guy gets shot, like what happened a few years ago. Student sitting on his porch when 2 thugs walled up with a gun.The student pulls his own gun and shoots one of the thugs. Then a block captain complains that the student was looking for trouble because he was sitting on his porch late at night.

LarsMendte2, I remember that from the news in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The big thing then was to go up to people and rip the large gold earings off heads and rips gold necklaces off necks.

That was around the time when Temple University wanted to move to the very top of Broad Street and out of the city limits. Mayor Wilson Goode gave land and tax breaks to keep Temple where they are.

    Temple stayed.

Years ago my daughter naively mentioned Temple as an option when selecting colleges. Since I was paying the room, board and tuition, that idea was immediately rejected. Yes, I generalized. Yes, my mind immediately went to the stereotypical vision of our dangerous, third world like urban culture. I proudly discriminated based on the demographics up of the neighborhood to improve the likelihood of my daughter safe. It's also why I live in the civilized suburbs. Statistics are objective. You can easily reduce your chance of becoming a victim by knowing who the perpetrators are likely to be, where they nest and avoiding those areas.

As someone who ACTUALLY attends Temple and lives off-campus, I'm going to say that YES the area is sketchy and dangerous but Temple does try its hardest to have police patrolling the streets around campus, sitting at the corners, etc. And to all the people questioning why people would choose to go to Temple, it is an EXCELLENT school, say what you want about the neighborhood and the people, but the school is fantastic. In my four consecutive years here I have watched Temple flourish. Temple is unfortunately placed in a neighborhood where people make sweeping generalizations about who we are as students (and our wealth) but as evidenced from the comments here it seems to be working both ways. I am no way validating the actions of those men yesterday but do NOT blame the University for the actions of people that aren't even affiliated with this school.

Unfortunately Temple is located in a neighborhood with many a degenerate thug who start behaving that way at an early age. It is also home to many who don't behave that way. The same can be said of UofP which is located also in a crime ridden area. Temple is a good school which unfortunately has almost all campuses in crime ridden areas. The recent newspaper article about the lady from Tioga, up near Temple's health sciences campuses who wants to build new homes up there, get real, that is a real crime ridden area, maybe even more so than Temple's main campus, no decent person of any color wants to be in a crime ridden area. It is nothing like the revitalizatiion of Fishtown and Northern Liberties which by the way before the revitalization was plain old North Philly. It is not that safe to walk off campus even in daylight but at night, forget it, you can't argue with a gun. These women were very lucky that items were all that was taken. I hope appropriate administrators tell it like it is to incoming and current students on all campuses, that it is not safe to park or live anywhere off campus, that if they choose to do so, they need to use shuttle buses provided by the university or another type of escort service. This is just another incident that casts a dark shadow on Temple. That lady was very foolish to be walking around off campus in the dark, even if she had another person with her, they couldn't argue with a gun.

fire fighter has it absolutely correct. Not one day after the furor about the phillymag article and you have a perfect example of what the author was talking about. No, it was not an eloquent or particularly well-written piece. And it made sweeping generalizations, some of which are arguable (at best) or outright incorrect. And the author used third-party quotes awkwardly, leaving him open to accusations of racism. But at its core, it proved one irrefutable truth: If a white person makes the slightest negative observation about a black neighborhood (even something like, "North Philly is a dangerous place."), he or she will automatically be labeled a racist. Somehow, it's an assault on an entire race to say "I don't want my child subjected to a home invasion." Yes, there is considerable historical evidence of malicious intent on some white folks' part that contributed to North Philly's decline from middle class to under-served. But random magazine writers are not here to atone for those sins. Plenty of black folks won't send their kids to Temple out of concern for their safety. Somehow, this doesn't provoke the ire of the liberal elite.

My wife and I went to Temple and so did a lot of our close friends, and we never had any problems. Yes, the area around Temple campus is bad and I feel horrible for the girls. But sometimes a little common sense would help stop some of the attacks. Maybe stop walking through North Philly with your head in your phone or your Ipod blasting in your ear where you can't hear anything. Not saying this is the case here but when going through Temple now, the students are paying more attention to their mobile devices than their surroundings. Just a thought...

835union, while I can agree with your last sentence, forget the bull dung, at present it is dark at 7:30 PM, it is not safe off campus in the daylight, but after it gets dark, you have to be nuts to take even a few steps. These pieces of dung carry weapons, or there are usually more than one of them. As said if you want to go to Temple or any school located in such an area, common sense is a must. I went to Temple for a short while many years ago when the area wasn't good, and I went at night and took the subway home to Olney station, never felt threatened. I grew up in a poor area of North Philly and walked home from wherever I was without the kind of fear you need today. A new breed has emerged, one that has no fear of being caught, no fear of jail and no concern for human life, they also have guns which weren't available to them back then. I don't care if it's North Philly, a suburb where crime is rare, a newly revitalized area like NoLibs (remember Sabina who was bicycling home from a friend's home at two in the morning and was followed, raped and killed), it's sad but when it gets dark whether it's 7:30 or midnight, you must be overly cautious, the thugs, the degenerates and the nuts pop up all over. I'm not interested in going back and forth on this topic, only got into it again because the implication was that it was still light at 7:30 pm. Tell your family and friends it can happen to them, any place, any where, always err on the side of caution.
