Teen charged in accidental shooting of cousin

A teenager has been charged with accidentally shooting his older cousin, police said.

Wayne Mitchell, 15, was playing with a .38 revolver inside a house on Birch Street near Frankford Avenue in Kensington late Thursday afternoon when the gun went off, wounding his 18-year-old cousin in the stomach, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

Mitchell left the scene of the shooting before police arrived and was later found in the next block of Birch Street, Small said. In that house, police found a bag containing the revolver and drugs.

Mitchell has been charged with aggravated assault and related offenses in the shooting, police said.

The cousin remains hospitalized, and was taken immediately into surgery at Temple University Hospital in critical condition on Thursday, according to police.
