Suspect sought in North Philadelphia carjacking

Surveillance cameras at a North Philadelphia gas station recorded a broad-daylight carjacking Monday morning, and police released the footage in hopes that help from the public will lead to an arrest.

Around 10:15 a.m., a 61-year-old man walked up to the cashier’s booth at a LukOil station on Hunting Park Avenue near Clearfield Street. A man who parked a late 1980s Oldsmobile station wagon nearby was recorded walking up to the booth behind the victim.

As the victim was paying the cashier, the suspect jumped into the man’s van and tried driving away. The victim reached through the driver’s side window of the van to try stopping the suspect. After a brief struggle, the suspect drove off in the victim’s car and dragged the man through the gas station and toward the street. It was unclear Tuesday whether the victim was injured.

The suspect is described as a black man who is about 5 feet 9 inches tall and is between 30 and 40-years-old. He has a medium complexion, a goatee and was wearing a gray sweater and baseball cap.

Tipsters are asked to call 215-686-TIPS (8477) or the Northwest Detective Division at 215-686-3353.
