Reward offered in Overbrook Park robberies

The city is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in a string of violent robberies in Overbrook Park, police said.

Eight robberies have taken place in the area around the Cobbs Creek Golf Club, on Lansdowne Avenue near 75th Street, since Jan. 8, with the most recent taking place Monday, Capt. John Przepiorka of Southwest Detectives said.

Police have released this composite sketch of the suspect in a string of robberies targeting women in Overbrook.

In the incidents, a male suspect, whom police believe to between 20 and 27 years old, approaches women as they walk alone, usually in the early hours of the morning as they're on their way to work or out running errands.

He usually approaches his victims, who range in age from 28 to 60, from behind, demanding their purses or cell phones. In some instances, he's pushed the woman to the ground, and has displayed a knife in others.

"We want to get this guy off the street, before he precipitates any further violence," Przepiorka said.

After grabbing the victim's belongings, the punk flees into the wooded area near the Cobbs Creek Golf Club, Lt. John Walker said.

Walker cautioned women in the area to use the buddy system, and avoid walking by themselves.

"We don't want people to live in fear," Walker said. "It's an issue of being aware of your surroundings."

Walker said a teen that police had identified as a person of interest in the robberies last month after he was found to be in possession one of the victim's cell phones has been released.
