A 48-year-old woman is in stable condition at Temple University Hospital after she was shot in the chest by a police officer Friday evening.

The incident happened around 6 p.m. on North Judson Street near Cambria in North Philadelphia.

While police were investigating a fatal shooting just up the block, neighbors ran over to tell them that a woman was armed with a knife and was chasing her boyfriend down Judson Street.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said police repeatedly asked the woman to drop the knife, and she refused.

The woman lunged at police after being asked to drop the knife, and an officer shot her once in the middle her chest.

Neighbors said the officer was visibly upset after having to shoot the woman, and that the street was filled with children when the incident took place.
