Police shoot alleged robber in SW Philly

POSTED: Friday, February 1, 2013, 3:12 PM

Police shot and wounded a gunman who they say robbed a Little Caesar's Pizza in Southwest Philadelphia Friday afternoon.

About 1:30 p.m., police were called to the Little Caesar's at Island and Elmwood avenues for an armed robbery, according to police. When a cop encountered the armed suspect nearby, on 72nd Street near Dicks Avenue, the officer fired once at the man, striking him in the hip, police said.

The wounded suspect was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and police said they recovered the gun he'd been carrying at the scene of the shooting. Information on the man's age or condition was not immediately available.

As is protocol with all police-involved shootings, the Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Do criminals have to work off the expenses of their hospital care, paperwork, processing and all costs related to their crimes in addition to restitution? If not, they should, even if it's sweeping the streets, cleaning out SEPTA stairwells, subways & buses - a trade off creating beauty to counter all of the ugliness they bring to the world. It may even have other positive effects like "having a purpose" in this life.
