Police searching for Rittenhouse Square attacker

A woman was attacked in Rittenhouse Square early last week, police said.

Police are looking for a man who brutally attacked and robbed a woman near Rittenhouse Square last Monday night.

Police gave this account of the incident:

The man approached the 24-year-old victim from behind as she was walking near 20th Street and Rittenhouse Square around 11 p.m. and demanded her wallet. He then smashed her head into a wall and slashed her several times with a knife before fleeing with an undetermined amount of money and her credit and debit cards.

Police said the victim suffered a facial fracture and cuts to her head, neck, chest, arms and hands.

A composite sketch of the suspect has been released by police. He is described as a stocky black man between 30 and 35 who is 5 feet 8 or 5 feet 9 and has short hair, bushy eyebrows and a short beard. He wore a gray hooded sweatshirt, baggy black sweatpants and may be homeless, police said.
