Police probing Delaware River for jumper

The search is on for a man who took a plunge into the Delaware River earlier this afternoon.

At about 2:15 p.m., witnesses saw a man jump over the railing at the Race Street Pier, on Columbus Boulevard near Race Street in Old City, Officer Leeloni Palmiero, a police spokeswoman, said.

Fire Department personnel on the scene said bystanders told them that the man wasn't provoked, and didn't appear to be in distress; he simply climbed over the side of the pier and jumped in, they said.

Officers from the police Marine Unit have been patrolling the waters around the pier since the incident, but haven't recovered anything yet, according to Lt. Andrew Napoli, who heads the unit.

The search for the jumper will continue through the night, Napoli said.
