Police identify teen slain in Nicetown Park

POSTED: Friday, September 14, 2012, 4:32 PM

Police identified the 16-year-old boy who was fatally shot at Nicetown Park Thursday night as Darius Person, of Rowan Street near Germantown Avenue.

The teen was sitting on a bench at the park on St. Paul Street near Germantown Avenue when he was gunned down, police said. Person - who was about three blocks from his home at the time of the shooting - was wounded once in his chest from point blank range just before 9 p.m. He later died at Temple University Hospital.

About six people were at the park at the time of the shooting, police said, and two witnesses were taken to the Homicide Unit for questioning. Officials did not disclose the shooter’s motive Friday afternoon.

Person was the second teen to be fatally shot in a city park this week, and the seventh person shot in a city park in just over a month.

An 18-year-old man who died after being shot in his back at a park on 22nd Street near Huntingdon in North Philadelphia has yet to be identified.
