Police: Man, woman critical after South Philadelphia shooting

A man and a woman were in critical condition early Friday morning after police say they were both shot in South Philadelphia late Thursday night.

A man and a woman were in critical condition early Friday morning after police say they were both shot in South Philadelphia late Thursday night.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m., police on patrol heard gunshots in the area of 7th and McKean streets and arrived at the intersection to find both victims lying on the ground, each suffering from at least two gunshot wounds, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

The woman, 22, was shot in the thighs and buttocks, and the 23-year-old man suffered two gunshot wounds to the head, Small said.

Both were rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where the woman was in critical condition but expected to survive and the man was in extremely critical condition.

Blood and at least eight large-caliber shell casings marked the street where the victims were found.

Small said police found several surveillance cameras on businesses in the area and that detectives were canvassing the area in search of witnesses.

As of early Friday morning, police hadn't determined a motive or any suspects in the shooting, which happened about four blocks from the scene where police shot a man as he was allegedly stabbing two other men a little more than an hour earlier.

The shooting remains under investigation.
