Police: Man targeted in drug-related double homicide

Troy Wimberly, 38, of West Philadelphia, was targeted in a drug-related double homicide at The Corral, a tavern beneath the El tracks on Market Street near 52nd early Friday morning, police said.

Crystal Shadding, a 43-year-old Eastwick woman, was also killed and police were unsure whether she was also targeted or if she was an innocent bystander.

Cops were dispatched to the tavern at 1:38 a.m., said Officer Christine O'Brien, a police department spokeswoman.

Shadding, who was shot in her chest and back, was pronounced dead on the scene. Troy Wimberly was shot in his head, chest and twice in his left arm. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and was pronounced dead at 2:05 a.m., said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Cops found seven shell casings on the scene and said the murder weapon was a .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun.

At least 10 people were inside the bar when the shots were fired, and Small said at least seven witnesses were taken to speak with homicide detectives.

Wimberly, of West Philadelphia, was involved in drug activity in the neighborhood surrounding the bar, police said. His criminal record dates back to 1992, and includes a guilty plea to a manslaughter charge in 1999, according to court documents.

The suspect in the shooting is described as a light-skinned man who has a heavy build and a thick beard. Police are unsure of the man's race. He was wearing a striped polo shirt and a dark hooded sweater over it.
