A man who police say robbed a Temple University student at gunpoint then pointed a gun at a police officer Monday afternoon was apparently saved from a bullet by an iPhone in his pocket, police said late Monday.
Temple cops spotted and chased the suspect after he robbed a student on Diamond Street near Broad shortly before noon, police said. When the pursuit reached 15th and Dauphin streets, the suspect turned and leveled the gun at an officer, prompting the cop to shoot at him, according to police.
Later Monday, police said they determined that an iPhone in the suspect's pocket had somehow deflected the bullet. The suspect was taken into custody uninjured, police said, and his weapon was recovered. No official charges had been filed as of late Monday.
There were no reported injuries to police or students.
