A 73-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon after police say he lost control of his car and careened into the Schuylkill River.

The man was driving a red car east on Kelly Drive around 12:30 p.m. when he lost control of the car while trying to make a lane change, according to investigators. The car then crashed onto the sidewalk about 300 yards before Boathouse Row and plunged into the river, police said.

A passerby who witnessed the accident attempted to rescue the man, who was eventually pulled out of the water by rescuers from the police Marine Unit. He was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead at 1:19 p.m.

The driver has not yet been identified.
