Police: Man, 21, shot dead after spat over a woman

An argument over a woman between her child’s father and her new boyfriend turned deadly Monday night, cops said, after a fight between the men escalated into gunfire.

The pair were arguing in front of a house on 44th Street near Fairmount Avenue in West Philly’s West Powelton neighborhood around 9:45 p.m., police said. The suspect got out of a green Pontiac Bonneville and the argument took a violent turn when cops say the boyfriend of the woman they were fighting over pulled out a 9mm handgun and fired at least four shots at the victim.

The man, 21, was wounded twice in his face and once in his chest. He was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he later died just after 11 p.m., police said.

Three witnesses were taken to speak with police after the shooting and cops found two shell casings on the scene.

Police said the shooter is also 21 years old. Immediately after the shooting, investigators received information that the shooter may have traveled to a house on Marlyn Road near Lansdowne Avenue in West Philly just outside Overbrook. When cops arrived, they saw movement inside the house and called SWAT officers in for backup.

The alleged shooter’s father then let police in the house, where they found an AK-47, but did not recover the 9mm weapon used in the homicide. The shooter was not inside when cops made entry and police cleared the scene around 10:45 p.m.

The suspect was last seen traveling in the green Pontiac Bonneville on 44th Street near Fairmount Avenue, cops said. They were still investigating the murder and searching for the shooter late Monday night.
