Police: Man, 19, critical after shooting in Mayfair

POSTED: Friday, December 7, 2012, 1:05 AM

A 19-year-old man was in critical condition early Friday morning after police say he was shot in the back in the Northeast's Mayfair section.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said police were called to the area of Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard at 10:40 p.m. and found the victim in a driveway behind houses on Revere Street -- not far from the parking lot of the McDonald's at the corner -- suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.

The teen was taken to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital and listed in critical condition around 1 a.m. Friday, Small said.

The man shot was being held as a prisoner, according to police, after cops found a revolver in his pocket and a small bag of marijuana on him. He told police that he was shot during a robbery and described his assailants only as five men, one of whom wore a gray hooded sweatshirt. The shooters ran north on Revere Street, then split up and ran opposite directions on Guilford Street, according to the victim's account, Small said.

Police recovered a gun believed to be a BB or pellet gun at the scene, but also found a spent shell casing from a real handgun, Small said.

The shooting remained under investigation early Friday morning.

As terrible and disheartening as this article is for the story itself, I also have to wonder if they are just giving away journalism degrees.

i grew up in the NE and travel back there occasionally to see what family and friends still live. when i do travel back, i am truly saddened to see what it has become. with each and every trip i take there i can see how the plight simply spreads further and further up the boulevard. there is little to no pride anymore. while i believe it is at a point of no return, reducing the hours of that mcdonald's would help. even in the mid-90's i can remember that place being a magnet for trouble except back then people were "rolled on." now, you get shot in the neck!

Get used to it. This is the new majority and the direction America is going. This is why this last election was a tipping point in our history. Unfortunately there's not turning back as the demographic shift will perpetuate socialism as the norm. Celebrate Diversity!

These issues are a direct result of economics. Only a racist blames it on diversity. Also, your alarmist attitude helps spread the hysteria of fear that perpetuates stereotypes of people like you, hiding in your basement and scared to death to go outside. Fitting how your name is an Ayn Rand reference.

That particular McDonald's is one of the worst in the city and has been for as long as I can remember. The food served there alone is lethal.

So many absentee landlords (mostly NY residents) began purchasing properties in these areas shortly after 911. The teens in this particular section of the city have always been quite territorial and the drugs are nothing new just something seen more often.

Ban out of state slumlords. File complaints against any residence thats owned by an out of state landlord. Not that anything will be done, but it's a start.

as a life long resident of the Northeast(Somerton & Upper Holmesburg), the Roosevelt Mall/Cottman area was the place to shop for many years. Now, with the exception of Macy's, the reamining stores have turned away from the established customer, catering to the black hiphop dress-like-a-ho fashions now. And as I drive away down Cottman, I see houses with front doors painted hot pink, purple, even orange. Now I have the big picture so I'm not at all surprized at the violence that's festering here.

Yup, Mayfair is now welfare and drug trade and robberies have replaced painters and union workers. Very sad to think that if all of the "mayfair" kids now between 30-50 had just stayed in the neighborhood it wouldn't have become da hood
