Police: 17-year-old student arrested after assault at Gratz High School

Police said a 17-year-old student is facing charges after assaulting a dean at Mastery Charter's Simon Gratz Campus in Nicetown.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested after he assaulted a dean at Simon Gratz High School, a Mastery Charter School in Nicetown, Wednesday morning, police said.

Police spokeswoman Officer Tanya Little said the boy, who was in the Mastery Alternative Pupil Support Program, was going after a female student just before 8:30 a.m. when a dean, who is a woman, intervened and was assaulted.

Little gave the following account of the incident:

The boy was involved in a verbal altercation with the other student when the dean separated the two. The boy then returned to the classroom and continued to yell at the girl before approaching the dean from behind, grabbing her by both of her arms and throwing her to the ground.

The dean called 911 and went to Temple University Hospital to be checked out. She was not seriously injured in the incident.

Police arrested the student at the school. He now faces charges of aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment, Little said. The girl involved in the original altercation was not injured, she said.
