Steals on wheels: Pickpocket-cyclist sought by police

Police are spinning their wheels looking for a pickpocket-cyclist who rode his bike next to a woman, snatched her wallet and pedaled away Monday night.

The robbery happened in Center City on Walnut Street near 8th around 7:35 p.m., police said.

The woman, who is a KYW Newsradio reporter, was riding her bike when the suspect approached her and stole her wallet, police said. She chased the man south on 8th Street toward Pine, and police said the suspect shook the victim from his trail after he turned onto 9th Street.

The man used the woman’s credit cards at convenience stores within 15 minutes of the incident, police said. The suspect was recorded on a store’s surveillance system, and police posted footage online in hopes that help from the public leads to an arrest.

The suspect is described as a thin white man who is in his early 20s, has long dark hair and weighs about 165 pounds. He was wearing a gray hoody, a gray wool hat, faded blue jeans, gray sneakers and a black backpack with aqua blue shoulder straps, police said.

Tipsters are asked to call 215-686-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online.
