Pedestrian hit by car, critically injured, crossing Boulevard

A pedestrian seriously injured when a car hit him on Roosevelt Boulevard in Oxford Circle last night remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The man suffered severe head injuries after he "ran into the middle of traffic" on the boulevard near Magee Avenue about 8 p.m., said Officer Jillian Russell, a police spokeswoman. He remains in critical condition at Aria Hospital's Torresdale campus. The driver, who wasn't injured, remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Authorities haven't yet determined the pedestrian's identity, Russell said. Witnesses can call the Accident Investigation District at (215) 685-3180.

The perils of Roosevelt Boulevard, considered one of the most dangerous roads in the country, drew scrutiny again this summer after a motorist hit a mother and her four sons as they crossed the highway on foot near 2nd Street on July 16. The woman and three of her boys died, and the driver, who witnesses said was racing another motorist, was jailed on vehicular homicide charges. A state lawmaker has called for red-light cameras and increased police patrols on the highway.
