Overbrook Park man arrested for Center City armed robbery

A 47-year-old man has been charged with robbing a woman at gunpoint in Southwest Center City last month, authorities said.

The incident happened Jan. 19 at 5:15 p.m. near 21st and Kimball streets. The woman told police she walking north on 21st Street near Washington Avenue when she noticed a man on the other side of the street. The man crossed Washington Avenue and approached her at 21st and Kimball, the woman told police.

The man allegedly pulled a small gun from his right pocket and demanded money. After taking the woman's wallet containing $45, her identification and her bank card he fled south on 21st Street, she reported.

During the investigation, police identified Dwayne Howell as the suspect based on recent photos of known offenders who frequent the area. He was arrested Tuesday.

Howell, of North 76th Street in Overbrook Park, has been charged with robbery and related offenses.

According to online court records, Howell has a lengthy rap sheet dating back to 1985 for minor offenses including retail theft, drug possession and robbery, although many of the charges were dismissed or could not proceed. He was arrested Jan. 28 for with drug possession and is scheduled to appear in court for that on Feb. 27.
