One dead, two critically injured in weekend shootings
Police are investigating three separate shootings from over the weekend that left one person dead and two others critically wounded, police said.
The murder took place early Saturday in the Ogontz section of North Philadelphia. Police responded to North Opal Street near Nedro Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. for a report of a person with a gun. Officers found a man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest.
He was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The victim has not been identified.
At about the same time, a 35-year-old man was shot four times on Dicks Avenue near 65th in Southwest Philadelphia. Police said the victim was shot twice in the arm, once in the left leg and once in the buttocks. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, listed in critical condition.
On Friday night, a 21-year-old man was shot near 61st and Columbia Avenue in West Philadelphia. The victim told officers he was with a friend in the area of 61st and Nassau Road standing outside his car when four men approached him and told him to "give up the car." The suspects then shot him and took his vehicle.
The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his left arm that went through his arm and and entered his chest area. He was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and underwent surgery. He is listed in critical condition.
The suspects in that incident are described as four black males wearing dark hoodies.
No arrests were reported in any of the incidents.

The murder rate will likely rise as the year progresses as it has done in Philadelphia's past and as it does in other cities. The point remains, however, that this current lower rate in comparison to the rate at the same time in previous years is indicative of a lower rate for the year overall. In particular, we may be able to stay under 300. Darren Lipscomb

If ya wanna get rich....move to Philly and sell hoodies. 1000hugs
Keep let'em out.....Criminals rule the city. dogman5
Its funny, I usually go to Franklin Mills, Neshaminy Mall, or Oxford Valley Mall to shop. I haven't been to Center City in a while so went, and I almost got robbed! TWICE :)...hahaha...attempted robbery #1 was the underground concourse that runs under the west side of Market? The dude tried to pull me aside and I kept walking while telling him I'm alright, and he cursed me out! He was angry at me for not wanting to get robbed :D! Attempted robbery #2 was in the restroom at the Gallery. The restrooms there are notorious for crime, and I usually go for the cafeteria restrooms at Liberty Place, which are safer and have less thugs. But I had an emergency because a piece of my braces was poking my mouth, so I had to go in there to adjust it in the mirror :)! On the way in I saw 2 thugs standing around the door, always a bad sign! I walked in anyway, and, of course, they walked in behind me :)! I had keep one eye on my mouth in the mirror and one eye on the two as they set up shop next to me at the sink! I moved the piece that was poking and left real quick :)! If I had stayed in there another minute, I would been looking down barrel of a gun :D! RAP_SUX
"four black males wearing dark hoodies." and this is news?? who cares they are just eliminating their drug rivals. 41Mag
Until we hold a certain group of people responsible for their actions this will go on forever. MWW-54
I blame the cold weather for this lackluster start to the opening of murder season. Consider the winter "preseason." DoctorLoads
This should not be a headline anymore. Chicago had 7 killed and 6 others shot in 8 hours. Our homies won't get to 400 murders with only 1 killed and 2 others shot. We seem to be slowing down after such a good start after the holidays. farley
They're just getting started. Once the weather breaks, they'll get that murder rate up. NoRoger_NoRerun_NoRent
I blame U Penn's Revitalization program on the quick down fall of the Southwest neighborhoods. Jp85- That's like saying you blame the drugs/violence in Kensington on Temple's expansion. They're in two different places and have nothing to do with each other.

This is coming to a neighborhood near you soon. Mark my words. Sportyrider71
This is certainly unfortunate, but, so far, this is our safest year since 2002. Darren Lipscomb
Lets ban guns so we can stop this violence, not... When will people get it through there heads banning guns will not stop this type of crime, the guns the criminals possess are already illegal !! gottaloveit
Moved away from this environment 11-12 years ago to a quiet, peaceful philly neighborhood. I still read about the bloodshed here and shake my head :). RAP_SUX
