MontCo cop and paramedic charged with drug theft

A Montgomery County police officer, who also worked as a paramedic, was arrested today for stealing prescription drugs from the ambulance company where he worked, prosecutors said.

When the chief of operations for Plymouth Ambulance Company noticed that morphine was missing from a supply closet, he notified Plymouth Police, who began looking into the thefts on May 5.

Investigations revealed that Plymouth Ambulance assistant chief Dominic Venezia had used his key card to gain access to the supply closed on several occasions and authorities subsequently placed hidden cameras in the office, which showed Venezia was responsible for the thefts, police said.

Authorities then went to the Whitemarsh Township Police station, where Venezia also worked as a police officer, and he admitted he had a drug addiction, police said.

Venezia was arraigned today on theft and narcotics charges and is no longer employed by the police department or the ambulance company, according to prosecutors. His bail was set at $5,000.
