Marijuana growing operation uncovered in Southwest Philadelphia

POSTED: Monday, August 6, 2012, 7:01 PM

A PGW crew was checking for a gas leak at a house in Southwest Philadelphia Monday morning when they stumbled across a marijuana growing operation, police said.

The home, on Reedland Street near 58th, was unoccupied when the workers arrived.

The crew called the cops around 10 a.m., and police said the operation took up the second floor of the home as well as the basement.

Fifty marijuana plants were found inside the house, along with specialized lighting, a generator and a filtration system.

It was unclear Monday night whether police contacted the owner of the house, or if any suspects were taken into custody.

Neo, you have no idea how wrong you are. Come to s.west or n.philly and see what "a lil weed" has done to our communities in this city. But you can sit behind your key board from a suburb and voice your opinion

Towel, i know the d.o.t. Tests for drugs.IF weed is legalized then the d.o.t would not randomly test for it. Do they test for cigs or soda? Legalized marijuana would be no different .So now how do you feel about a high truck driver next to your family ?please pay attention to the argument.

Do they test for alcohol if they think a truck driver is drunk and gets into an accident? After all its legal, so it must be like soda! I think you have been breathing to much of the air in Mayfair, you don't make any sense.

Marijuana hasn't done anything to SW or N Philly, sorry. Tell me how 25% of the adult population in Montreal/Toronto can get by just fine smoking marijuana but somehow its a bad thing in Philadelphia. Their murder rate is a small fraction of Philadelphia yet marijuana and other drugs are in far greater abudance. Something tells me its the individuals who are to blame for neglecting their communities and the drug is simply a scape goat.

Probably by forced entry, which they are legally allowed to do if there is a gas odor coming from or in front of the property.

Because the other 75% keeps it under control. When in areas like s.west and n.Philly (which clearly you have never spent any time in) have the exact opposite 75% of it being run by drugs this is the result.

You are completely wrong. Marijuana does not cause crime. The laws that marijuana illegal does. The only reason it causes so much crime in your area is because you area is the easiest place to launder it. Make it legal and you will see a lot less crime in your area. There is a huge market to distribute marijuana to the middle class, some are willing to kill for it. Which you are seeing.

Oh no! Evil marijuana in Evil southwest Philly where bad people live! Sounds to me like just more stigmatization and institutional racism. For some weird reason I find the people throwing their trash down the street sewer drains, on the sidewalk and out there car windows (on to the already filthy side of the road) more offensive and dangerous. Aggressive driving and loud talkers are bad too. Don't discount the power of one's visual understanding of the physical landscape. A harsh and trashy landscape helps to create a harsh and trashy people.
Leave plants and witch hunts alone.

@towelie: "Marijuana does not cause crime....Make it legal and you will see a lot less crime in your area."

If marijuana does not cause crime, it's legalization would not have any effect on the crime rate. The crime rate would neither go up, nor would it go down.

Except maybe the crimes of possession or distribution.
