Marijuana growing operation uncovered in Southwest Philadelphia

POSTED: Monday, August 6, 2012, 7:01 PM

A PGW crew was checking for a gas leak at a house in Southwest Philadelphia Monday morning when they stumbled across a marijuana growing operation, police said.

The home, on Reedland Street near 58th, was unoccupied when the workers arrived.

The crew called the cops around 10 a.m., and police said the operation took up the second floor of the home as well as the basement.

Fifty marijuana plants were found inside the house, along with specialized lighting, a generator and a filtration system.

It was unclear Monday night whether police contacted the owner of the house, or if any suspects were taken into custody.

And that would be why he said legalize it. Making it LEGAL, and also would be grown outside and not be a fire hazard. Keeping it illegal only increases the chance of fire hazards.

Report the truth and Byrnes dontnget it. Ask the 'legal grows " in l.a. How they're making out. The Mexican cartel makesbthem sell their weed. Drugs have violence and power attached no matter how "ok" you are with it. Besides do you want the fuel tanker driver hauling 10,000 gallons of petro after blowing out a legal bluntnor two?

There are already standards for DOT (Department of Transportation) drug testing. Someone hauling 10,000 gallons of petro would be subjected to that random drug testing. They also test for legal pharmecuticals as well as alcohol. Your argument is ignorant.

As for Mexico controlling a US crop if it was legalised, 1940 called, they want their propaganda back.

The only reason that the Mexican drug cartels exist at all is because of the Drug War. The ONLY reason that drugs have any association with violence and power is because they are illegal. During Prohibition, liquor distributors were shooting eachother, but when wwas the last time you heard of a state store or beer distributor shooting up their competetion- even though use of alcohol, unlike illegal drugs, actually does have a direct link to increased violence among those who use it.

So, it's okay if your hypothetical fuel-tanker driver drives under the influence of legal alcohol, right? If we had to choose, I would pick a driver under the influence of marijuana, where the main hazard is that he/she may drive too slowly, versus one who was legally drunk.

Yeah, let's ignore guns and crack and heroine. Pot heads are the real issue with our fair city.

Police time wasted on busting folks for growing a harmless plant is less time spent fighting actual crime.

Remember our boy Phelps toking on a bong after the last Olympics? Really killed his career, huh? If you are going to outlaw Pot you should also outlaw liquor. Actually, liquor has killed many many folks. Never seen or heard anyone die from pot smoking. Stop the Bravo Sierra. Legalize it and tax it.
