A 29-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot on Chestnut Street near 53rd in West Philadelphia Tuesday night, police said.

Around 11:30 p.m. the victim and the suspect were in a physical altercation, said Lt. John Walker, of the Southwest Detective Division.

The suspect pulled out a revolver and shot the man in his neck and arms, police said.

An officer in a marked patrol car was driving by at the time of the shooting and saw the incident unfold, according to Chief Inspector Scott Small. Police apprehended the suspect, a 56-year-old man, near the scene and recovered the weapon used in the shooting, Small said.

He was arrested and was being interviewed by detectives early Wednesday morning, Walker said.

The victim was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and was listed in critical condition at midnight.

Police were unsure of what the men were arguing over.
