A man whom police described yesterday as a person of interest in the slaying deaths of a woman and her 12-year-old son is now in police custody.

Carlos Rivera, 25, is at police headquarters in the process of being charged in connection with the deaths of his girlfriend, Atlanta Deveney, 35, and her 12-year-old son, Elijah Rosado, police said. The two were found under a burning mattress in the Wissinoming apartment they shared with Rivera around 8:50 a.m. Saturday.

Autopsies revealed that Deveney had been beaten and strangled and Rosado had been stabbed to death.

According to authorities, Deveney and Rivera had a long-time abusive relationship.
