Man convicted of raping 5-year-old boy faces 101 years in prison

A jury on Monday convicted a 44-year-old man of repeatedly raping his young godson over a two-year period while the child was in his care.

Eric Maloy now faces up to 101 years in prison after being found guilty of numerous offenses, including raping a child, involuntary deviate sexual assault of a child, child endangerment and corrupting the morals of a child.

The boy was 5 years old when Maloy began raping and sodomizing him in 2009 after offering to take care of him when his mother couldn't afford to send him to camp, according to the District Attorney's Office. The abuse continued until 2011 and was discovered when the young victim told other family members about it.

In a statement, D.A.'s Office spokeswoman Tasha Jamerson said Maloy had several previous arrests for child rapes and a murder, but "managed to avoid conviction on all those cases." Two men in their 20s whom Maloy raped and sodomized when they were between 13 and 18 years old, Jamerson said, along with Maloy's most recent victim, testified at the trial.

"This child showed enormous courage in testifying to such horrible crimes and, by doing so, has protected other children in our community," Assistant District Attorney Branwen McNabb, who prosecuted the case, said in a statement. Assistant District Attorney Ashley Lynam, who also prosecuted Maloy, said she and McNabb will seek the maximum sentence.

Maloy's sentencing is scheduled for March 15.
