Man critical after police-involved shooting

A man was critically injured after two undercover police officers shot him in an apparent "misunderstanding" in Kingsessing.

Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross told reporters this morning that the 20-year-old Upper Darby man shot last night was a pizza delivery driver who may not have heard the plainclothes officers announce themselves as police and who tried to flee because he feared they were robbers trying to ambush him.

The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. on 51st Street near Willows Avenue when undercover officers working in the area heard gunshots around 51st Street and Baltimore Avenue, police spokeswoman Officer Christine O'Brien said. The cops then saw a man, walking in a hoodie with his hands in his pockets south on 51st, and ordered him to stop, but the man got in a gold Ford Taurus parked on Willows and drove toward the officers, O'Brien said. Both officers fired, hitting the driver and his car several times. The driver continued through the intersection and crashed into a fence on the corner.

He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he remains in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his head, neck and leg, O'Brien said. Internal Affairs investigators are probing the incident, and the officers were placed on desk duty.
