Man accused in Piazza at Schmidt's murder arrested in Texas

POSTED: Tuesday, June 26, 2012, 5:43 PM

A man wanted for allegedly shooting another man to death outside a trendy bar at Northern Liberties’ Piazza at Schmidt’s complex earlier this month was arrested Tuesday in Texas, authorities said.

Steven Miller, 22, was pulled over in Houston by U.S. Marshals and officials from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and arrested without incident, according to U.S. Marshals Eastern District of Pennsylvania Supervisory Deputy James Burke.

Police say Miller, who court records show has prior arrests for illegal firearms possession, shot Maurice Kimble, 24, of Upper Darby, several times after an argument broke out between the two men on the patio at PYT bar. Kimble collapsed in the courtyard at the Piazza and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

After Kimble’s slaying, U.S. Marshals in Pennsylvania developed information that indicated Miller had fled to Texas. On Tuesday, the accused killer was being held at a Harris County jail awaiting extradition back to Philadelphia.

Jeff- you are a fool. There is an epidemic taking place with inner city African American youth. Deflect all you want about some perv football coach or perv priests. Black kids are killing maiming and shooting people every single day in Baltimore, Philly, Detroit, Chicago. Go bury your head in the sand.

PYT Bar? PYT must stand for Prove You're Tough. I wonder if this murder trial will get as much attention as the "party planner" murder

@ ahumanbeing, blaming slavery, seriously? You're just part of the problem of people making excuses instead of taking responsibility for themselves.

Sadly, it's no surprise that this scumbag had prior arrests, or that the DA and our Judges failed to keep him off the street. And for those of you who think it's racist to point out that most of these shooters are black you should know that black people are the majority race in this city, stop griping.

@ahumanbeing - Perhaps your history books mentioned how slaves were rounded up and sold by their own people and how it still happens today. Or maybe you enjoy self loathing over events that you arent responsible for and cant change. Either way i suggest you get a hold of yourself and realize that this man didnt put a bullett in another mans head because of slavery. He did it because of the social structure of inner cities and a lack of real community and morals.

You are right. Except we are one community. Not two. The social structure of our cities, and any lack of morals, is our comprehensive responsibility.

I have love in my heart. Do you?

"Slaves were rounded up and sold by their own people..." Not this tired old canard again! Can't you racists come up with something more original. 1. The slaves who were sold were more likely conquests of some tribal conflict or other and were likle not the sellers' "own people". 2. So what? Did they hold spears to your racial ancestors' heads and FORCE them to buy other humans, stuff those human beings in ships and put them in chains where they wallowed in their own filth for weeks, then enslave them for a couple of hundred years, separating their faimilies at will (many times snatching infants from their pleading mothers' arms)? No, so you can stop with the "your own people sold you" foolishness. Gee-whiz, I MIGHT have a little molecule of respect if you'd just admit to being racist, worthless trash.

I predict that in November, philly.com will show a photo of a White man that shot someone in Philadelphia. It has to happen sometimes.

You mean you're actually admitting that you have an even smaller brain than hipdaddy? Well, it's very wise of you to know, and own up to, your limitations.

Man, don't you get it? The way for a black man to get respect in this "white" world is to act the "thug." None of you racist commenters would even give a second look to someone with dark skin dressed in jeans and a t-shirt and when he's wearing a suit you put him down. Some poor kid growing up in the ghetto sees and experiences how badly his kind gets treated when he's kind and gentle and how people respect the man who is "dangerous." You actually perpetuate this behavior with your comments here when you continually put them down. You want them all to shoot each other, you want them all to fail, you want them all to fit your view of the world. You solidify your hold on your world view. What you don't realize is how closely tied we all are in this world, closer than you think in your "safe" little world. You'll be gone in 100 years and that world will not remember what is said here, it will be different and not what you think it will be like. Your legacy a forgotten, racist subculture some student not yet born will study and write a paper as to how your progeny eventually crawled out of the muck and overcame that narrow-minded shadow world of extremists. This murderer is an outlier and not representative of an entire people. There are millions of people out there who don't think like you and don't act like you and just don't want to feed the trolls. Once in a while we will pop up and "throw" one out there, rattle your cage and watch the usual stirrings, confident that the world really is a better place even with you commenting here on Philly.com.

    — ahumanbeing. There is no denying that slavery happened and that economic disparity continues. However, by giving this man a free pass do you - and a mean YOU - not strip him of all autonomy? You say he is incapable of making choices, is merely a product of history and environment. You make him into an automaton and rob him, and those like him, of whatever dignity they have.

There is a real problem here but it is not one white people can fix. Only African Americans can fix it. It would be less daunting had we not killed off their leaders several decades ago but they still need to decide if this is how they want ot live. Let's face it, for the most part inner city crime is black on black. Whites skate. So as I said, they have to decide for themselves what kind of community they want.
