In the city's third murder in less than 10 hours Monday, a 24-year-old man was shot to death on a corner in Northeast Philadelphia's Northwood section shortly before midnight, police said.

Cops were called to Horrocks and Orthodox streets at 11:36 p.m. and found the victim lying on the sidewalk on the edge of a residential block suffering from several gunshot wounds to his neck, shoulder, chest and upper torso, Chief Inspector Scott Small said at the scene. Medics pronounced the man dead at the scene at 11:50 p.m.

Small said ballistic evidence at the scene, including at least five .45-caliber shell casings found within inches of the man's body, indicated that he was shot at point-blank range.

No one witnessed the shooting, police said, but investigators found private surveillance cameras on a nearby mini market on Orthodox Street and on a residence and were checking those to see if they captured the shooters.

The suspects were described as three men, one of whom had a light complexion and wore dark clothes and a red hat. They were last seen running north through an alleyway behind the 4600 block of Horrocks Street, police said. Cops said the surveillance camera at the house likely captured them fleeing the scene.

Cops hadn't found any solid witnesses early Tuesday, but neighbors told police they heard between five and eight shots fired.

A duffel bag and a bottle of malt liquor left behind outside a house near the corner where the shooting happened were marked as evidence, and a woman who told cops the bag belonged to her was being interviewed to determine if she witnessed the shooting, according to investigators.

Police were unsure what motivated the fatal shooting, but said the area is a location known to police for drug activity. The shooting remained under investigation early Tuesday morning.

The 24-year-old man was the third person murdered in Philadelphia on Monday, after a 24-year-old woman was strangled in East Germantown and an 18-year-old man was shot to death at a playground in North Philadelphia. The latest homicide brings the city's 2012 count to 252 murders, compared with 224 at this time last year.
