A 19-year-old man is in critical condition following a shooting Saturday night near Temple University's main campus.

Police said the victim was shot once in the back near Norris and Warnock streets shortly before 11 p.m. He was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.

The victim told police he went to the area to meet a female, and that as he was walking he heard someone call his name from behind. The victim said he turned around and saw an unknown male standing in the street. The male pulled out a gun and started shooting. After being shot, the victim ran to nearby Percy Street where he contacted police.

Temple University sent an alert to students urging them to stay away from the area, although it said no one from the university was believed to be involved in the shooting.
