A homeless man is facing a slew of charges for attacking and attempting to rape a woman who took him into her Olney home to warm up and have something to eat, police said.
Darryl Smith, 52, was charged Friday with aggravated assault, attempted rape, unlawful restraint, possession of an instrument of crime, false imprisonment and related offenses for attacking the woman with a box cutter around 4 p.m. yesterday in her home on 8th Street near Lindley Avenue, authorities said.
Smith, who police said is homeless, befriended the woman through church, a police source said. Yesterday, sources said, the woman invited him to her home to get him out of the frigid temperatures and have a meal. Once inside, though, sources said, Smith wasn't interested in the shelter or food: He pulled the blade on the kind woman, cut her clothing and attempted to sexually assault her.
Smith was arrested not long after the attack, police said. He was held yesterday on $100,000 bail. The victim was not severely injured.
