Gunman sought in Thriftway robbery

Cops are looking for a man who they say attempted to steal items from a North Philadelphia supermarket last week, then pointed a gun at store employees who tried to stop him.

Police on Thursday released surveillance stills showing the man in hopes that someone will recognize him. They said he went into the Thriftway at 21st Street and Lehigh Avenue at 8:15 p.m. March 14, took several items, hid them under his shirt and attempted to leave the store. A security guard then tried to stop the man, police said, and he pulled out a gray semiautomatic handgun, pointed it at the guard and said, “What? What?”

The man then fled in an unknown direction.

He’s described by police as black, in his 40s, about 5 feet 10 with a dark complexion and a heavy build. He wore a tan polo shirt with a red stripe and blue jeans.

Tipsters should contact the Northwest Detective Division at 215-686-3353/54.
