Five robbed at gunpoint during adult basketball game

Five men armed with handguns stormed into an adult recreational basketball league game Monday night and robbed five people at gunpoint.

It happened about 9:35 p.m. at the Christy Recreation Center on 56th Street near Christian in West Philadelphia during a game for players ages 30 and up.

Lt. John Walker of the Southwest Detective Division said no cops were there at the time.

“It’s over 30, so you figure you’re not gonna have problems — but these young kids walk in guns blazing and order everybody to the ground,” he said.

Five people were robbed of their wallets, cellphones and other personal belongings.

Walker said about 20 people were at the game, in addition to 12 players, referees and other rec-center administrators.

No injuries were reported.

The suspects were described as black men between 5 feet 7 and 5 feet 10, each wearing gray and black hooded sweatshirts.

Some witnesses told police the men were wearing masks.

Walker said the building was not equipped with a surveillance camera inside or outside the gymnasium.
