Feds nab N.D. fugitive in NoLibs

Anthony Campbell traveled a long way to get put behind bars.

And his trip back to North Dakota, where he's accused of killing a man he was supposedly friends with, won't cost him a dime.

Campbell, 37, was arrested at a house on 6th Street near Poplar in Northern Liberties this morning by U.S. Marshals, said James Burke, supervisor of the Marshals' Fugitive Task Force for the Philadelphia field office.

He was wanted in connection to the Sept. 15 murder of Shannon Brunelle, 25, who was found dead inside the garage of an apartment building in Minot, N.D., Burke said.

It was unclear how Brunelle was killed, but a coroner in North Dakota ruled the death a homicide, Sgt. David Goodman, of the Minot Police Department, told the Daily News.

Goodman said that Brunelle and Campbell were both homeless and were "well-known to many on the force" in Minot. At the time of the slaying, the men were staying with a mutual friend at the apartment building.

Investigators in North Dakota caught wind that Campbell had traveled roughly 1,660 miles to Philly in the wake of the murder because he previously lived in the city and still has ties to the area, according to Burke.

While living locally, Campbell also racked up an "extensive arrest record here," Burke said, on charges including assault and drug violations, the most recent of which was filed in 2003.

Campbell had relocated to Minot with his mother, Goodman said. When she moved to Georgia, Campbell shacked up with his then-girlfriend. Things apparently went sour: Police in Minot responded to several domestic disputes between Campbell and the woman, according to Goodman.

He remains in custody without bail as he awaits extradition for Brunelle's slaying, as well as a prior, unrelated burglary charge out of Minot.
