A senior citizen was shot and critically wounded during an attempted home-invasion robbery in Southwest Philadelphia Thursday afternoon, police said.

The 79-year-old man was inside the living room of his house on Yocum Street near 66th, in the Mount Moriah neighborhood, when cops say a gunman broke in through a basement window.

The victim was home alone at the time and heard noise coming from the basement, said Lt. John Walker, of the Southwest Detective Division.

He walked toward a door leading to the staircase and the suspect fired through the door as the victim was about to open it, Walker said.

The man was wounded in his stomach and leg. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition as of 7 p.m.

The suspect ran through the front door of the home, and a detailed description of the shooter was not available. Neighbors told police they did not see the suspect fleeing the scene.
