Crawling burglar steals cash, cigs from mart

POSTED: Monday, December 24, 2012, 9:45 AM

Happy Christmas Eve, readers!

Now help give the police a nice present by identifying this loser who broke into an East Germantown convenience store early Thursday and stole cash and $800 worth of cigarettes. The burglar got into the Tavares grocery store on Chelten Avenue near Heiskell Street by forcing open the basement door, police said. Security video shows him crawling on all fours through the store, presumably to hide from surveillance cameras. He then stupidly notices a security camera - and gives cops a good picture of himself by staring briefly into it after emptying the cash register, coins and all, into his pants pockets and a bag. See video of the heist here.

He is described as a black man with medium complexion, age 20-30, with a scruffy beard and stocky build. He was wearing a dark knit hat, dark hooded jacket, blue jeans and black/white sneakers. Tipsters can call (215) 686-TIPS, Northwest Detectives at (215) 686-3353 or 9-1-1.
