Cops break up 'unruly' crowd in Center City

POSTED: Monday, September 20, 2010, 10:13 PM

A planned autograph session at a Center City record store was canceled by police earlier tonight after hundreds of rowdy kids crammed into the area.

Police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore said 200 to 300 teens swarmed around the F.Y.E. store at Broad and Chesnut streets about 5:30 p.m. in anticipation of event organized by Power 99 FM. According to the radio station's Web site, R&B star Trey Songz was supposed to sign copies of his CD at the store from 5 to 7 p.m.

When the crowd became unruly, the radio station called off the autograph session, Vanore said. Scores of cops were called to the scene and helped disperse the crowd, he added. There were no reports of any arrests.

The young people mistakenly thought the Arlen Specter Library had opened, and had come with their spray-paint cans to tag it. When asked about the event in his posh DC hotel, Specter denounced music produced by anybody since 1950 as "garbage," and recommended prison sentences for anyone who would deface Specter's expensive monument to himself. He also indicated he may try a political comeback as a Tea Bagger.

DJ :) :) :O LOL I had one 'official" contact with Snarlin' Arlen. He was running for reelection in '86 and had stopped by Cannstatters Octoberfest to campaign. He had called me at the 8th District (I was the Corporal on duty) to find out why the police were not providing traffic control and security. I explained that due to manpower cutbacks (yes, Wilson Goode did police cutbacks back then)there was no one available. Arlen demands the home phone number of the Captain, and when I refuse he sends two of his aides to the district to demand from me that I call the Captain in. (I had alredy notified the Captain what was happening, and he was coming in anyway). The CIB Chief Inspector went to Cannstatters and talked to Arlen, pulled a few highway cops from I95 to hang around. The next day (Monday), the Captain calls me in and tells me that one of the aides made an official complaint against me for not being cooperative with the Senator. It was a harrassment complaint and I was cleared but the complaint stayed in my Internal Affairs file for the rest of my career. I was my great pleasure to have a Joe Sestak sign on my front lawn.

walked through this "unruly" crowd at about ten past five...just as the first of several police cars was responding. Besides a lot of screaming and swooning kids, there was nothing unruly about the crowd. Lots of kids gathered at rush hour, excited and loud, but just kids being kids. I know everyone's on high alert because of the flash mob hysteria, but I wonder if the reaction would've been to cancel the event and disperse the crowd if this had been all white tweens lined up for Justin Bieber?????

No drinphilly, the response probably wouldnt have been the same, but is there a reason for that? Has a precedent already been set to create that difference in reaction? Thats the unfortunate reality. You said it yourself. There is anxiety due to prior flash mob incidents. People were also assaulted during one or two of these flash mobs. How can you give anyone the benefit of the doubt at this point? The police are in a no-win situation.

drinphilly with the race baiting again...fact is it may have or may have not been dispersed depending on how the kids are acting...fact is large African american kids have shown themselves not to behave properly when in a large crowd...they usually have a herd mentally and one or two idiots can set them off
