Cops: Robbers used tire iron to beat victim

POSTED: Monday, November 22, 2010, 11:28 AM

A robbery victim remains in critical condition at Hahnemann University Hospital after being beaten in the head with a tire iron in North Philadelphia early this morning, according to police.

The 21-year-old man was walking on North 12th Street near Poplar around 1:11 a.m. when he was hit in the back of the head with a tire iron by one of two men who stole his backpack, police said. Cops rolled up on the scene and saw the beating and the victim bleeding from the head, police said.

The two robbers fled on foot and three other men, who were waiting for them nearby in a green Mercury Mountaineer, sped away as well. Cops pulled over the car on Pennsylvania Avenue near Fairmount and the three occupants jumped out and ran away. Two of those men were captured a short time later hiding in bushes and the victim's backpack was recovered from the abandoned car, police said.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the two men who were arrested and the other three suspects remain on the lam.

So dumb. I know they don't care for the victim's life, but why would they risk doing 20 years in jail to steal a backpack? Odds are there is less then 50 dollars in there.

"Cops rolled up" -- what is this, a mid-90's rap?

@ rocingtim: Or, how about this? They could use the money to buy you the English lessons that you so obviously need. It's "their," nitwit, not "there". And your punctuation needs work, too. The next time you want to jump on the racist bandwagon, at least make sure that your writing is up to par. You'll still be an idiot, mind you, but at least you'll be an idiot who demonstrates a basic understanding of the rules of grammar and punctuation.

these criminals should be water-boarded, not to extract information but just for fun. give them a taste of what they did to the victim

@Wb2nd- So typical of you to be more concerned about which word to use and punctuation. The 2 idiots carjacking, now 1 idiot probably could'nt spell cat if you spotted him the C and the A. Great job at being concerned about a newport comment than about the real problem of violent armed menaces to society.

Finally a "rally call" to outlaw tire irons! These tire irons are too easily available on the street. If your tire iron is stolen, you don't even have to file a police report. Why do people that own several cars need more than one tire iron? We need legislation to reduce the number of tire irons.
