A 24-year-old man was hospitalized after he was shot in his back and right arm during what police said may have been a robbery attempt in the Northeast's Oxford Circle neighborhood Monday night.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said the victim told police he was on Agusta Street near Benner shortly after 10 p.m. when he was approached by three men who he believed were trying to rob him. One of the men shot him twice before the trio fled westbound on Benner Street toward Summerdale Avenue.

The victim was unable to provide detectives with a solid description of the assailants, Small said.

He was taken to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital to be treated for his injuries. Police said they did not find blood or ballistic evidence at the scene of the shooting, and the crime remained under investigation early Tuesday morning.
