The 74-year-old Bridesburg man who allegedly shot a 14-year-old boy Saturday night for drinking near his house has been identified by police as Joseph Deapreau.

Neighbors said a large, vacant area of land stretching back to the Delaware River by Deapreau's house on Orthodox Street near Garden is a known gathering place for teens, who come by the hundreds to illegally party there.

On Saturday around 9 p.m., Deapreau approached a group of the teens with a flashlight in one hand and a gun in the other, police said. The kids thought the gun was fake, but Deapreau shot one of them in the stomach, sending him to the hospital, police said.

The remaining kids surrounded Deapreau until cops arrived, according to a police spokeswoman.

Deapreau was charged with aggravated assault, firearms violations and related offenses, police said.
