Cops: Youth in custody after park shooting

A young man is in custody after opening fire in a crowded Center City park and then cowering inside a nearby store, police said.

Just before 3:30 p.m., shots rang out at the Starr Garden Park on 6th Street near Lombard, police said. Witnesses told investigators that the shooter was with a group of kids at the time, and pulled out a handgun when an argument with another group of kids got heated.

The kid opened fire, but no one was struck, police said.

Detectives tracked the alleged shooter to the Adidas store on South Street near 5th and found him hiding inside the store's basement. When they reviewed surveillance video from the store's cameras, they found footage of the suspect stashing a handgun behind one of the store's walls, police said. They later recovered the weapon, believed to have been used in the shooting.

That suspect, whose name and age aren't being released, remains in custody as the investigation into the incident continues.
