Cops: Witness stops driver after fatal Kensington crash

The quick thinking of a good Samaritan helped police identify a woman who allegedly fled the scene of a fatal crash in Kensington last night.

Just before 11 p.m., that driver, who has not been identified by police, allegedly struck Gordon Vanderburg, 55, as he rode his bike through the intersection of B and Ontario streets, police said.

The woman behind the wheel, 53, allegedly drove away, but was stopped about two blocks later by a witness to the collision.

A police source close to the investigation said the witness pulled in front of the driver, blocking her in, and then snatched her keys to ensure she stayed put until police arrived.

Medics arrived moments later and took Vanderburg, who lived not far from the scene on Arbor Street near Ontario, to Temple University Hospital. He was pronounced dead there at 4:30 a.m., succumbing to the severe head injuries he received in the crash, police said.

In the meantime, investigators took the female driver in for questioning, but later released her. Sources said she is expected to visit the Accident Investigation Division tonight with her lawyer to provide a statement.

At the time of the crash, the driver allegedly showed signs of DUI, according to those sources.

A police spokeswoman said that no charges have been filed in the case, and that the investigation is ongoing.
