Cops: Two critically wounded in Wynnefield shooting

Two men are in critical condition after a double shooting in Wynnefield Tuesday evening.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said shots were fired at 5:03 p.m. on Berks Street near 54th in the driveway of the William B. Mann Elementary School. Cops from the 19th District, headquartered at 61st Street and Haverford Avenue, arrived at the scene and found a 36-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the back of his head and took him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in extremely critical condition.

Small said a 22-year-old man was also shot in the left side of the jaw and in the left shoulder, but drove himself to Presbyterian Hospital. After he was stabilized, the man was taken to HUP where he is also in critical condition.

Police said the two victims were involved in an argument on the street with occupants of a dark-colored Chevrolet Caprice prior to the shooting. The three men in the Caprice were all wearing white T-shirts and tan cargo shorts and the car was last seen heading north on 54th from Berks. Small said that police are holding the car the second victim drove at Presbyterian Hospital and that the side window of that car appears to be shot out.

Three bullet casings, broken glass and a large amount of blood were found at the scene, Small said. Cops say there are city surveillance cameras at 54th and Berks and private cameras at the Mann Elementary School.

One witness is being interviewed at Southwest Detectives.

Victim who drove himself to hospital must be a nice guy, leaving the other victim to die while he takes care of himself.
