Cops: Teen stabbed after attending mayor’s bowling party

An 18-year-old boy who stabbed a girl because she rebuffed his romantic advances last night did so after both teens attended an event at Erie Lanes Bowling Alley where Mayor Nutter was promoting positive recreation for teens in light of recent youth mobs, police said.

An 18-year-old boy who stabbed a girl because she rebuffed his romantic advances last night did so after both teens attended an event at Erie Lanes Bowling Alley where Mayor Nutter was promoting positive recreation for teens in light of recent youth mobs, police said.

About 400 teens showed up for the bowling party at Erie Lanes in the city's Juniata section, an event Nutter described in a press release as "a demonstration of what good teenage fun is all about."

But as teens were released from the event around 10 p.m., a 16-year-old girl was approached by Corey Maxey, 18, who tried to hit on her as she walked to the bus stop with friends, police said.

When the girl ignored his advances, Maxey, of 10th Street near Thompson, stabbed her in the arm with a novelty key that contained within it a retractable blade, police said.

The victim was taken to St. Chirstopher's Hospital for Children by family members, where she was treated for the puncture wound and released.

Maxey fled on foot but was arrested at his home around 9:45 a.m. today, police said.

Maxey was arrested just last year inside of the Gallery at Market East for disruptive behavior with other teens, though police did not release specific details of that incident.

Nutter held the bowling party during the first weekend of enhanced 9 p.m. curfews in Center City and University City. Police said 50 kids were arrested Friday and 12 Saturday for violating curfew in those areas.

The enhanced curfew did not apply in Juniata Park, where the event and alleged stabbing occurred.
