Cops: Teen brothers killed in "drug nexus"

Police said they found more than 1,700 prescription pills and more than $100,000 in cash in an Overbrook house where two teen brothers - ages 13 and 17 - were shot to death last night.

Police said they found more than 1,700 prescription pills and more than $100,000 in cash in an Overbrook house where two teen brothers - ages 13 and 17 - were shot to death last night.

Homicide Capt. James Clark said at an afternoon press conference that the house where the boys lived with their parents on Westbury Drive near Malvern Avenue had a "drug nexus" to it and that the shooter had gone there around 7:30 p.m. to conduct a drug transaction.

"There definitely was a drug nexus that ultimately contributed to these young men being killed," Clark said.

Christopher Malcolm, 17, and his brother, Rohan Bennett, 13, were in the living room of their home with a close friend when someone in the house let the shooter inside to conduct a drug transaction, according to police.

The teens were talking with that man when something triggered him to shoot Malcolm in the living room and shoot Bennett as he tried to run away. Rohan was pronounced dead at the scene and Malcolm was later pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

The boys' father was upstairs at the time but their mother was out of the house. Police searching the residence found 1,700 illegal prescription pills, including oxycodone, Percocet, Xanax, morphine, a small amount of hydroponic marijuana, six bottles of codeine, $102,000 in cash and four handguns, most of which was recovered from the parents' bedroom, said Narcotics South Capt. James Kelly.

"They had a pretty good business going on there from what we can tell from the investigation," Kelly said.

Police said they're still investigating whether the parents or their children were the main players in the drug trade at the house. Clark said the parents are expected to be charged for the drugs that were found, but their names have not yet been released.

Police said they do have a person of interest in the case, but have not released his name.
