Police: Cops shoot armed suspect in West Philadelphia
A cop shot and wounded a man in West Philadelphia early Wednesday morning after authorities say he leveled a loaded revolver at plainclothes officers during a scuffle.
The plainclothes cops were in an unmarked car in the area of Conestoga Street near Pennsgrove after police received a complaint that men on bicycles were dealing drugs in the area, said Chief Inspector Scott Small. Just after midnight, the officers spotted the 20-year-old suspect riding a bike on Conestoga Street with a gun on his hip.
The cops approached the man, Small said, and he pulled the gun on them. He struggled with the officers and refused to drop the gun after police ordered him to do so several times, prompting one officer to fire once at him, hitting him in the chest.
"The officers showed a lot of restraint by only firing one time," Small said at the scene.
The wounded suspect was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was in critical condition and undergoing surgery around 1:30 a.m.
Police recovered his gun, a loaded .38-caliber revolver, at the scene, Small said.
Crime-scene investigators and detectives remained at the scene investigating the shooting around 2 a.m.
The Cops have been smokin the bad guys in record numbers this year. Good job. onepercenter
Less police restraint and more criminal element extermination please. If the judges won't make the effort, then.... dogman5
why even do surgery and have the taxpayers pay for another scumbags medical bills!!!! Let the piece of s@@T die!!!! If you try to kill a cop you dont deserve to live!!! So now he will recover and probably do some jail time, get out and possibly do the same thing whitey1577
Where in the story is the part where the plain clothed officers identified themselves? If I was being rushed by 2 guys in plain clothes I would be pulling my firearm and possibly shooting them if I feared for my life. This guy may be a scumbag but he still has rights. We all know how the PPD likes to bend and break the rules which makes me wonder if they ID'd themselves before or after shooting this guy? Taxpaying Voter
Taxpayer while i agree with some of your comments, its also not stated in the story if the perp had a valid liscense to carry a firearm! Or if the perp had a prior record for firearms or anything. whitey1577- If the perp was 20, he wasn't old enough to legally own a handgun or apply for a permit. Take it from there. DonQ
