After experiencing a brutal three-day period where six people were slain last weekend, the city managed to escape this Saturday with no reported shootings, according to police.

Unfortunately, the streak of good luck was short-lived. Around 1:47 a.m. today, a 23-year-old man was shot several times in his back, leg and head on Ridge Avenue near 29th Street in Strawberry Mansion. He was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital at 2:06 a.m.

Though his name has not been released, police have identified him as black. In a study released by the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C. on Friday, Pennsylvania ranks fourth in the nation for black homicide victimization, with many of those victims coming from right here in Philadelphia.

The three states with black homicide victimization rates higher than Pennsylvania this year are Nebraska, Missouri and Michigan.

Fourth is bad. Very bad. But it's better than second, which is what we came in at last year.
