Cops: Man shot while driving in West Philadelphia

A 28-year-old man was hospitalized after he was shot while driving his white, 2007 Mercedes Benz on 57th Street near Wyalusing Avenue in West Philadelphia Wednesday afternoon, police said.

About 12:40 p.m., a gunman fired at least eight shots at the victim, one of which wounded him in his left cheek, said Lt. John Walker of the Southwest Detective Division.

The victim sped away from the scene, Walker said. He headed to the 19th District, headquartered on 61st Street near Haverford Avenue, to report the incident.

Cops took the man to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was listed in stable condition Wednesday night.

Walker said the man was in the area to check on rental properties that he owned, and that the shooter’s motive remained unclear. A detailed description of the suspect was not immediately available and police said there were no witnesses.

The incident occurred near the scene of two other shootings that unfolded in the 19th District Wednesday.

Around 12:30 a.m., police shot a man on 56th Street near Appletree - about seven blocks from the intersection where the man and his car were targeted.

A man was also hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after he was shot on Ithan Street near 56th around 3:30 p.m. That shooting occurred about three blocks from the scene of the police-involved shooting.
