A man died after being shot in the head at point-blank range in East Mount Airy early Monday morning, police said.

Cops were called to Rugby and Upsal streets for a report of a man shot shortly after 2 a.m. and found the victim lying on the sidewalk bleeding from a gunshot wound to the face, investigators said. He was pronounced dead at the scene just before 2:30 a.m.

Police said they found one shell casing from a 9mm handgun a few inches from the man's body. They were looking for a gold sedan last seen traveling southbound on Rugby Street from Upsal in connection with the shooting.

The man did not have a wallet or ID on him, police said. They estimated that he was in his 20s and said he had tattoos on his arms.

As cops investigated the homicide, a man who lives nearby stood across the street in the quiet neighborhood, looking across manicured lawns at the victim's body draped with a white sheet.

"It's just sickening," said the man, who identified himself only as Charles, shaking his head. "Nobody cares."

Cops weren't sure what led to the shooting and remained at the scene investigating around 4:30 a.m. Monday.
